Reports To: General Director of Central Services and Facilities Planning

 

Position Purpose:   To organize and direct the custodial operations in order to keep the District’s facilities maintained and operational so that they present no problems or interruptions to the education program.

 

Qualifications:

 

  1. High School graduate or equivalent.  Combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the required tasks.

  2. Three - five years experience within a janitorial operation or janitorial company in a commercial or school environment.

  3. Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, hazardous materials, and proper ways necessary to perform the assigned tasks.

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  1. Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office software programs to include word processing, spreadsheets, Power Point, etc.

  2. Demonstrated ability to supervise, direct, and engage personnel in carrying out multiple work assignments.

  3. Experience and training in custodial methods, materials, and equipment (Auto-scrubber, burnisher, floor machine, high and low speed buffer, extractor, carpet machine, etc.).  Such alternatives to the above qualifications as determined to be appropriate and acceptable.

  4. Demonstrated knowledge and ability to understand dilution ratios.

  5. Knowledge of standard practices, tools, and terminology in custodial operations including cleaning floors, carpets, furniture, walls, surfaces, fixtures, sanitizing restrooms, trash removal, etc., and other assigned skill areas.

  6. Ability to handle multiple priorities in a highly demanding team atmosphere and process information in an orderly, accurate, and timely manner.

  7. Must have a valid Kansas driver’s license and possess a good driving record.

  8. Ability to perform work independently according to prescribed standards and procedures with a minimum of supervision.

  9. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

  10. Ability to read, write, perform basic math, and possess basic computer skills.

  11. Dependability and the ability to get along with others.



Physical/Emotional Requirements:  

 

  1. The incumbent may be required to use the below requirements during any part of the working day.

  2. The incumbent must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

  3. Ability to work from a ladder.

  4. Speaking, reading, hearing, manual dexterity.

  5. Standing, sitting, bending, stooping, walking.

  6. Reaching, pushing, pulling, climbing, driving.

Performance Responsibilities:

 

  1. Reports to the General Director of Central Services and Facilities Planning to receive each day’s assignments.

  2. Supervise all Building Operators, Custodian IV, Custodian III, Custodian II, Custodian Helpers, etc. in the planning and performance of their day-to-day assignments.

  3. Assist all Building Principals in evaluating the performance of assigned staff, interviewing potential employees, recommending transfers and reassignments, recommending termination, etc.

  4. Assist Building Principals in delivering corrective action as necessary under the guidance of the Human Resources department.

  5. Work with Human Resources in arranging for substitute employees as necessary.

  6. Provide or facilitate training for all District custodial personnel related to policies and procedures, safety, continuing education, etc.; Ensure that all District custodial employees are certified annually in Blood Borne Pathogens, Employee Right to Know, and Asbestos training.

  7. Plan, host, and oversee Fall, Winter, and Spring in-service meetings for all District custodial employees.

  8. Assist General Director of Central Services and Facilities Planning in monitoring budget expenditures and planning for future budget expenditures.

  9. Plan, schedule, and coordinate the workflow of District custodial personnel.

  10. Ensure that all District custodial employees respond to work requests in a timely and courteous manner.

  11. Ensure that all District custodial employees accomplish tasks in a safe and efficient manner such as sweeping, scrubbing, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, waxing, polishing, cleaning restrooms and water fountains, washing windows and walls, etc.

  12. Ensure that all District custodial employees keep building and premises (Including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas) neat, clean, and free from rubbish at all times.

  13. Ensure that all District custodial employees keep all floors preserved and in a clean condition.

  14. Ensure that all District custodial employees make minor building repairs and replace light bulbs as necessary.

  15. Ensure that all District custodial employees shovel, plow, and/or sand walks and steps as appropriate.

  16. Ensure that all District custodial employees keep an inventory of janitorial supplies and equipment, and order supplies as necessary with approval of Building Principal.

  17. Ensure that all District custodial employees periodically inspect air filters throughout building and replace as necessary.

  18. Ensure that all District custodial employees assist with routine maintenance of boilers.

  19. Ensure that all District custodial employees conduct regular inspections and test all emergency lighting, electrical, and fire prevention systems according to District policy.

  20. Ensure that all District custodial employees remain on school premises during school hours and non-school hours, when the use of the building has been authorized and attendance is required by the Building Principal.

  21. Ensure that all District custodial employees report major repair needs promptly to the Building Principal.

  22. Ensure that all District custodial employees report any damage and/or vandalism immediately to the Building Principal.

  23. Ensure that all District custodial employees determine, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, security systems activated, and all lights are turned off.

  24. Ensure that all District custodial employees comply with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste.

  25. Ensure that all District custodial employees follow proper safety procedures and use necessary personal safety supplies and/or equipment in carrying out day-to-day assignments.

  26. Ensure that all District custodial employees cooperate with local and state inspectors involved in health, fire, and safety.

  27. Ensure that all District custodial employees maintain SDS sheets for all products/chemicals on site at their school/building location.

  28. Identify special projects for all District custodial employees above and beyond their day-to-day responsibilities.

  29. Plan and coordinate Summer custodial/maintenance responsibilities for all District custodial employees.

  30. Establish refinishing schedule each year for all gymnasium floors in District.

  31. Compile and distribute a quarterly newsletter to all District Principals and custodial employees.

  32. Estimates time, material, and labor costs for various work carried out by District custodial personnel .

  33. Prepares reports and maintains records including purchasing requests, payroll sheets, work orders, equipment purchases, inventories, cost estimates, etc.

  34. Prepares and processes purchasing documents.

  35. Assign and oversee a variety of work assignments for the Service Center Building Operator and rotating District custodian including such things as cleaning floors, carpets, furniture, walls, surfaces, fixtures, sanitizing restrooms, trash removal, etc., and other assigned skill areas.

  36. Direct and assist department personnel in operating and caring for equipment used in daily work assignments.

  37. Recommend replacement and/or major repairs of equipment.

  38. Follow the District’s system for the receipt and issuance of parts and supplies as well as maintaining recordkeeping and inventories.

  39. Attend appropriate training sessions, meetings, and classes as part of professional development.

  40. Ensure that department personnel maintain accurate and complete time sheets.

  41. Respond to emergency situations during and after hours as requested for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.

  42. Demonstrate professional image through appearance, language, and work ethic.

  43. Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Terms of Employment:: Twelve (12) months

 

Evaluation: Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the board policy on evaluation of Classified Personnel.

 

Significant Associations: The performance responsibilities are not limited to those outlined in this description and may include any other responsibilities as assigned by the administrator/supervisor.
