Job Title: Spanish/English Translator/Interpreter
Reports To: Director, EL Department
Position Purpose: This position is responsible for facilitating written and/or oral communication with staff, students and families who are being tested for Covid-19, Influenza A/B and/or Streptococcus. The Interpreter/Translator will not be responsible for any health testing, but may be present, in person, during some testing, using mitigation strategies (eg. a mask, PPE, social distancing). At other times, the interpreter/translator will use Zoom or an approved communication platform to assist students or staff who are testing.
The job of Translator/Interpreter was established for the purpose of providing translation work of various documents and activities into Spanish or English, attending a variety of meetings and serving as a Spanish/English translator, and serving as a resource to other district personnel requiring assistance with non-English speaking persons.
Qualifications:
- Bachelors in Spanish/Modern Language or related degree
- Combination of education and translation/interpretation experience will be considered
- Fluent in Spanish and English (reading, writing, speaking, and listening)
Performance Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
- Prepares a wide variety of documents (e.g. handbooks, testing materials, eligibility
reports, calendars, manifestation hearing reports, etc.) for the purpose of
providing/translating materials in Spanish/or English.
- Attends a wide variety of meetings and/or hearings for the purpose of serving as an interpreter of Spanish and English conversations.
- Participates in workshops, conferences and/or meetings for the purpose of maintaining skills for professional growth and/or conveying information. Reads a variety of materials (e.g. letters, instructional materials, brochures, articles, handbooks, bulletins, Individualized Education Plans, ) for the purpose of interpreting materials in Spanish and/or English.
Translates verbatim idiomatic materials and conversations to/from English and Spanish
for the purpose of ensuring the accuracy of information.
- Verifies translations made by others for the purpose of reviewing and editing materials for accuracy, context, readability, grammar, and style.
- Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Job Requirements - Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge is required to perform basic math, read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge-based competencies are required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include correct English and Spanish usage including vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Skills are required to perform single, technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include proficiency in Spanish, translating written documents, operating standard office equipment, using pertinent software applications, preparing and maintaining accurate records.
Ability is required to schedule activities, gather and/or collate data, and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances, analyze data utilizing defined but different processes, and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups.
Working with diverse groups and maintaining confidentiality are essential requirements of this job.
Physical/Emotional Requirements: The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity.
Terms of Employment: 9 months; salary and work year to be determined by the Board of Education.
This position is dependent on the availability of Kansas Department of Health grants funds . It is anticipated that grant funds will be available for this position for the 2021-22, 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years.
Evaluation: Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board policy on evaluation of Classified Personnel.
