Title:   Driver (Van) 

 

Reports To:  Transportation Supervisor

 

Position Purpose:  The Van Driver provides clean, safe, and reliable transportation to ensure students enjoy the full advantage of district programs. To accomplish these tasks, the Van Driver must work closely with the staff and administration of the district.

 

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Possession of a current, valid driver’s license
  • Pass DOT physical requirements (or 90 days to obtain).
  • Must have a current TB test.
  • Complete the following classes before driving: Defensive Driving, CPR, and First Aid Certification.
  • One year motor vehicle operation experience, including experience throughout each of the four seasons, and possession of a good driving record.
  • Computer operation experience.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills

 

Knowledge/Ability/Skills:

  • Ability to provide clean, safe, and reliable transportation to ensure students benefit from district programs and activities.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively and cooperatively with members of the school district and community.
  • Ability to react to change and frequent interruptions in a productive and positive manner, meeting deadlines as assigned.
  • Ability to remain focused in noisy surroundings.
  • Ability to operate all vehicles and equipment safely.
  • Ability to implement and follow the vision and mission of the District.
  • Ability to keep student and personnel information and records confidential.

 

 

Physical/Emotional Requirements:  The incumbent may be required to use the below requirements during any part of the working day.

  • Prolonged sitting.
  • Turning, reaching, bending and lifting
  • Must be able to provide physical assistance to disabled students in entering, securing and exiting the vehicle.
  • Ability to operate a standard motor vehicle, including the ability to operate vehicle at night.
  • Must work indoors and outdoors during the school year.
  • Must work in noisy, crowded, stressful environments with numerous interruptions.
  • Must work in and around dust, fumes, and odors.

 

 

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Provide clean, safe, and reliable transportation to ensure students benefit from district services.
  • Transport students to and from designated school activities.
  • Help disabled children get on and off the van.
  • Ensure children stay in their seats at all times.
  • Maintain discipline when students are on the van.
  • Report those students who do not obey rules to the proper authority.
  • Keep the assigned van clean.
  • Drive assigned route schedule.
  • Check van before each operation for mechanical defects.
  • Notify the proper authority in case of mechanical failure or lateness.
  • Discharge students only at authorized stops.
  • Transport only authorized students.
  • Report all accidents and complete required reports.
  • Enforce regulations against smoking, drinking, and eating on the van.
  • Respond to information requests in a cooperative, courteous, and timely manner.
  • Attend all in-service meetings as required.
  • Implement and follow all district health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Blood borne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
  • Implement and follow all transportation regulations and laws.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

 

Terms of Employment:

 

This is a 2-year, grant funded, 9 month position; salary and work year to be determined by the Board of Education.

 

Evaluation:

 

Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the board policy on evaluation of classified employees.
