Title: Family and Student Advocate for English Learners
Reports To: Director of Programs for English Learners
Position Purpose:
To act as a liaison with school counselors, administrators, teachers, students, and families to ensure students are provided the necessary guidance to graduate from high school and are college and career ready.
Qualifications:
- High School or GED; bachelor degree or some college credits preferred
- Bilingual in English and Spanish
- Experience meeting with students and/or families regarding academic needs
- Possession of a valid Kansas driver’s license & reliable transportation
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to speak, read & write proficiently in English and Spanish
- Ability to promote, establish, and maintain constructive working relationships with staff, district, and building administration, students, and parents
- Ability to make home visits with students and families
- Basic computer skills in Google and Microsoft Office
- Ability to compile and report program data
- Skilled in organizational detail
- Ability to plan and attend two family activities per school year
- Ability to work differentiated hours to attend occasional school and parent meetings and provide support for parent/teacher conferences
Physical/Emotional Requirements: The incumbent may be required to use the skills and abilities listed below during any part of the working day: Speaking, hearing, visual, walking/mobility, consistency of temperament, ability to work with a variety of people at the same time, stamina for working in stress-producing environments.
Performance Responsibilities:
- Translate between families, students, and school personnel regarding student academic needs via conferences, phone conversations and home visits.
- Maintain records of student academic needs.
- Receive recommendations for referrals of students for additional services and communicate information to school and district staff.
- Maintain complete and accurate records of student referrals and student/parent/teacher contacts needed for audits and accountability by the KSDE.
- Assist with Migrant Summer School by translating, tutoring, and assisting teaching staff as needed.
- Act as a liaison at the Welcome Center and assist with summer enrollment/registration.
- Oversee planning and preparing for two parent night activities a year
- Other duties as assigned.
