REPORTS TO: Assistant Superintendent, Teaching and Learning
POSITION PURPOSE: The role of the consulting teacher is to provide support and assistance including consultation regarding effective teaching strategies, materials, and resources, assessment procedures, and effective programming using current research and practices as the foundation. The consulting teacher will provide ongoing job-embedded professional development, have a strong commitment to student learning and the school improvement process, and provide leadership for curriculum and assessment initiatives. The consulting teacher will serve as a liaison between building staff and district personnel and policies.
QUALIFICATIONS: This position requires:
- M.A. degree in education
- Three to five years of successful classroom/building experience in the area of language arts
- Extensive knowledge of all aspects of early childhood literacy
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: This position prefers:
- Extensive knowledge of PK-12 literacy with an emphasis on early childhood literacy
- Teacher leadership experience
- Knowledge and experience designing and presenting various forms of professional development to large and small audiences
- Three to five years successful classroom experience in Language Arts and related areas
PHYSICAL/EMOTIONAL REQUIREMENTS: (The incumbent may be required to use the below requirements during any part of the working day.) Speaking, hearing, visual, reading, writing, word processing, mobility, consistency of temperament, ability to work with a variety of problems at the same time, stamina for working long hours and in stress producing environments.
KNOWLEDGE/ABILITY SKILLS
- Knowledge of literacy College and Career Ready Standards
- Knowledge in the development and administration of performance, formative, and summative assessments
- Knowledge of research-based, effective instructional classroom practices in both content and classroom management
- Knowledge of the curriculum development processes
- Knowledge of current research in P-12 literacy with an emphasis on early childhood literacy
- Knowledge and skill in instructional and utility technologies including the Google Suite
- Knowledge of data analysis and how to use the data to guide instruction
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
- Skilled in the use of cooperative learning structures
- Skilled in developing relationships with administrators and teachers
- Skilled in working with adult learners
- Skilled in organization and management of multiple tasks
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support Curriculum and Assessment Teams
- Design and manage kindergarten readiness measures (ASQ3)
- Identify needs, design and facilitate professional development for early childhood language arts in alignment with district initiatives
- Monitor the implementation of tiered systems of support and coordinate the work and professional development for early childhood literacy interventionists
- Monitor program quality of early childhood literacy coaching model and provide necessary support for preschool coaches in collaboration with the Coaching Program Coordinator
- Design and implement processes to ensure early childhood literacy initiatives are effectively implemented
- Lead the process of selecting core and tiered instructional resources for early childhood and literacy programs
- Complete classroom observations in support of T&L, including becoming CLASS observation qualified
- Coordinate district screening and benchmark testing for elementary
- Coordinate integration of technology curriculum with ELA and related areas
- Assist with major initiatives of the district including PK-12 literacy, equity and cooperative learning
- Support the transition between preschool and kindergarten
- Maintain a visible presence in the schools to monitor the core literacy curriculum within the elementary classrooms and tier two and three resources
- Seek out professional development opportunities in an effort to continue learning and growing professionally, professional reading and attend local and national conferences
- Coordinate the purchase and dissemination of secondary textbooks
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 10 months; Salary and work year to be determined by Board of Education.
EVALUATION: Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the board policy on evaluation of administrators.
