Description | Title: Dispatcher/Scheduler
Reports To: Transportation Supervisor
Position Purpose: To assist the Transportation Supervisor in ensuring an efficient in-house fleet operation and contracted school bus operation for the District with school buses, activity buses, vans, cars, etc. so that they present no problems or interruptions to the education program.
Qualifications:
- High school graduate or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Good knowledge of fleet and bus operations, scheduling programs, logistics, methods, etc. in a school environment.
- Ability to work effectively with parents and students of varied backgrounds, physical and emotional needs, etc.
- Must possess basic computer skills, telephone skills, etc., and ability to apply skills in day-to-day operations.
- Must have or obtain a valid Commercial Kansas driver’s license and possess a good driving record.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, hazardous materials, and proper ways to perform the assigned duty.
- Ability to understand and follow simple verbal and written directions.
- Ability to perform work independently according to prescribed standards and procedures with a minimum of supervision.
- Ability to plan and supervise the work of others.
- Ability to handle stressful situations and medical emergencies.
- Dependability and the ability to get along with others.
Physical/Emotional Requirements:
The incumbent may be required to use the below requirements during any part of the working day.
- This position is classified as medium work (level 3).
- The incumbent must be able to exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or 1 to 10 pounds of force constantly.

- Reaching, pushing, pulling, climbing, driving.
Performance Responsibilities:
- Reports to the Transportation Supervisor to receive each day’s assignments.
- Assist Transportation Supervisor in scheduling personnel (Activity drivers, paras, etc.).
- Assist Transportation Supervisor in managing subcontractor activities by outside vendor handling student bus transportation (M to M, Regular Education, ELL, Special Education, Head Start, etc.).
- Assist Transportation Supervisor in ensuring that the computer routing system is accurate and updated on a timely basis.
- Assist Transportation Supervisor in overseeing and assisting all schools within District on the usage of the computer routing system.
- Assist Transportation Supervisor in handling all in-house and subcontractor issues (Driver behavior, address changes, bus stop changes, routing issues, student behavior, complaints, etc.) related to the District bus operation (Student bus transportation and Activity bus transportation).
- Assist Transportation Supervisor in handling all issues related to District transportation using fleet vehicles (Vans, cars, etc.).
- Assist Transportation Supervisor in scheduling transportation for all District-related activities (Field trips, athletic events, extracurricular activity events, etc.) using computer scheduling program.
- Coordinate necessary duties related to daily operation in absence of Transportation Supervisor.
- Must become knowledgeable with Kansas School Transportation regulations/standards/statutes.
- Answer incoming calls for the Transportation Department and handle/route accordingly.
- Periodically check all bus stops within the District to ensure the safety of all passengers.
- Periodically validates eligibility of all bus riders based on District’s distance requirements from primary residence to the nearest school.
- Spot check all bus drivers within District (In-house and subcontracted) to ensure they are following safe driving practices.
- Drive in-house bus, van, car, etc. as necessary.
- Accomplish tasks in a safe and efficient manner.
- Perform routine administrative duties as required.
- Report minor/major vehicle repair needs promptly to the Supervisor of Vehicle Operations.
- Comply with local laws and procedures related to fleet and bus operations.
- Follow proper safety procedures and use necessary personal safety supplies and/or equipment in carrying out day-to-day assignments.
- Must attend training sessions each year as necessary in accordance with District policy.
- Cooperate with local and state inspectors involved in health, fire, and safety.
- Demonstrate a professional image through appearance, language, and work ethic.
Term of Employment: Ten and one-half (10.5) months.
Evaluation: Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the board policy on evaluation of Classified Personnel.
