Reports To: Maintenance Supervisor – Roads and Grounds

 

Position Purpose:   To keep the District’s facilities, grounds, and athletic fields maintained and operational so that they present no problems or interruptions to the education program.

Qualifications:

 

  1. High school graduate or equivalent.

  2. Successful completion of a course of study in turf management, horticultural science, arborist studies, grounds maintenance, or equivalent experience and training..

  3. Three to five years experience and training in landscaping, grounds maintenance, mowing, fertilizing, soil testing, aerating, weed control, painting athletic field lines, heavy equipment operation, snow removal, machining, welding, concrete/asphalt, fencing,  playground maintenance, and roof repair.  Such alternatives to the above qualifications as determined to be appropriate and acceptable.

  4. Must have or obtain a valid Commercial Kansas driver’s license and possess a good driving record.

  5. Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, hazardous materials, and proper ways necessary to perform the assigned tasks.

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  1. Documented knowledge of standard practices in the care of trees, shrubs, flowers, grasses, etc.

  2. Knowledge of standard practices, tools, and terminology in landscaping, grounds maintenance, heavy equipment operation, and other assigned skill areas.

  3. Ability to drive and operate medium to large trucks, mowers, standard skid-steer, and a variety of standard farm, lawn, and turf management equipment.

  4. Ability to maintain vehicles and equipment.

  5. Ability to read, understand, and apply technical information in equipment and facilities maintenance manuals, technical bulletins, blueprints, and associated groundskeeping literature; must be able to interpret the technical language within the assigned skill areas.

  6. Ability to design or modify components to meet job requirements in the assigned skill areas.

  7. Knowledge of colors.

  8. Ability to perform work independently according to prescribed standards and procedures with a minimum of supervision.

  9. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

  10. Dependability and the ability to get along with others.



Physical/Emotional Requirements:  

 

  1. The incumbent may be required to use the below requirements during any part of the working day.

  2. The incumbent must be able to lift and carry up to 100 pounds.

  3. Ability to work from a ladder.

  4. Speaking, reading, hearing, manual dexterity.

  5. Standing, sitting,  bending, stooping, walking.

  6. Reaching, pushing, pulling, climbing, driving.

  7. Ability to work in varied weather and temperature conditions.

  8. Ability to work from heights.

 

Performance Responsibilities:

 

  1. Reports to the Maintenance Supervisor – Roads and Grounds to receive each day’s assignments.

  2. Perform grounds maintenance activities as assigned or by following an established work schedule.

  3. Respond to work requests in a timely and courteous manner.

  4. Perform maintenance and repair tasks in accordance with appropriate standards and procedures.

  5. Assist with a variety of work assignments including such things as painting athletic field lines, machining, welding, concrete/asphalt, fencing, playground maintenance, and roof repair.

  6. Periodically, perform manual digging and manual labor using hand tools.

  7. Trim and prune trees on District property.

  8. Prevent and repair soil erosion as necessary.

  9. Assist with development and carry out preventative maintenance program.

  10. Follow the District’s system for the receipt and issuance of parts and supplies as well as maintaining recordkeeping and inventories.

  11. Ensure that all assigned vehicles, machinery, equipment, tools, and supplies are accounted for, secured, and used correctly.

  12. Attend appropriate training sessions, meetings, and classes as part of professional development.

  13. Accomplish assigned tasks in a safe and efficient manner.

  14. Operate and care for equipment used in daily work assignments.

  15. Maintain accurate and complete time sheets.

  16. Assist other maintenance areas with work requests as assigned.

  17. Occasionally operate medium and heavy equipment in course of day-to-day work assignments.

  18. Assist with snow removal as necessary including operating snow plows, tractors, etc.

  19. Demonstrate professional image through appearance, language, and work ethic.

  20. Require good attendance record for continuity of operations.

  21. Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Term of Employment: Twelve (12) months

 

Evaluation: Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the board policy on evaluation of Classified Personnel.


Significant Associations: The performance responsibilities are not limited to those outlined in this description and may include any other responsibilities as assigned by the administrator/supervisor.
