Description

Title:  Maintenance III – Carpenter

 

Reports To:  Maintenance Supervisor – Carpentry/Painting/Locks     

 

Position Purpose:  To keep the District’s facilities maintained and operational so that they present no problems or interruptions to the education program.

 

Qualifications:

  1. High school graduate or equivalent.
  2. Successful completion of a Journeyman Carpentry Program, or an equivalent experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
  3. Minimum of two years’ experience in finish carpentry and rough carpentry within a commercial, industrial, or facilities operations setting.
  4. Experience and training in painting, finish work, plastering, ceiling tile installation/repair, drywall installation/repair, carpentry, insulation, carpet installation/repair, flooring installation/repair, ceramic tile installation/repair, glass block, weather stripping, window installation/repair, door installation/repair, and door hardware and lock installation/repair. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as determined to be appropriate and acceptable.
  5. Must have or obtain a valid Kansas driver’s license and possess a good driving record.

 

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  1. Knowledge of commercial/industrial practices, processes, OSHA regulations, and applicable code requirements related to the carpentry trade.
  2. Knowledge of standard practices, tools, and terminology in painting, plastering, carpentry, flooring, window installation/repair, door installation/repair, and other assigned skill areas.
  3. Ability to read, understand, and apply technical information in equipment and facilities maintenance manuals, technical bulletins, blueprints, and associated literature; must be able to interpret the technical language within the assigned skill areas.
  4. Ability to design or modify components to meet job requirements in the assigned skill areas.
  5. Ability to work in varied weather and temperature conditions.
  6. Ability to work from heights.
  7. Knowledge of colors.
  8. Ability to perform work independently according to prescribed standards and procedures with a minimum of supervision.
  9. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  10. Dependability and the ability to get along with others.
  11. Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, hazardous materials, and proper ways necessary to perform the assigned tasks.

 

Physical/Emotional Requirements: 

 

  1. The incumbent may be required to use the below requirements during any part of the working day.
  2. The incumbent must be able to lift and carry up to 100 pounds.
  3. Ability to work from a ladder.
  4. Speaking, reading, hearing, manual dexterity.
  5. Standing, sitting, bending, stooping, walking.
  6. Reaching, pushing, pulling, climbing, driving.

 

 

Performance Responsibilities:

 

  1. Reports to the Maintenance Supervisor – Carpentry/Painting/Locks to receive each day’s assignments.
  2. Respond to work requests in a timely and courteous manner.
  3. Perform maintenance and repair tasks in accordance with appropriate standards and procedures.
  4. Install structures and fixtures such as windows, frames, floorings, trim, hardware, etc. using appropriate power tools, hand tools, etc.
  5. Remodel office and work space including partitions, paneling, etc. for the purpose of ensuring safe and efficient utilization of space.
  6. Assemble and fasten materials (Wood, plastic, fiberglass, drywall, etc.) to make framework or props using hand tools, wood screws, nails, dowel pins, glue, etc.
  7. Build or repair block walls, stairs, mantles, counter tops, cabinets, shelving, moldings, doors, frameworks, furniture, floors, and other wooden fixtures used in buildings using appropriate woodworking machines, power tools, hand tools, etc.
  8. Construct forms and chutes for pouring concrete.
  9. Finish surfaces of woodwork or wallboard in buildings using paint, paneling, hand tools, etc.
  10. Fill cracks and other defects in plaster or plasterboard using patching plaster, trowels, sanding tools, etc.
  11. Apply shock-absorbing, sound-deadening, and decorative paneling to ceilings and walls.
  12. Measure and mark cutting lines on materials using ruler, pencil, chalk, and marking gauge.
  13. Shape or cut materials to specified measurements using appropriate machines, power saws, and/or hand tools.
  14. Use levels, rules, plumb bobs, framing squares, and surveying equipment to ensure everything is level and secure.
  15. Assist with a variety of work assignments including such things as painting, plastering, ceiling tile installation/repair, drywall installation/repair, carpentry, carpet installation/repair, flooring installation/repair, weather stripping, window installation/repair, door installation/repair, etc.
  16. Assist with development and carry out preventative maintenance program.
  17. Erect scaffolding, moveable and immoveable staging, rigging, ladders, etc. as necessary using proper safety methodology; move furniture and equipment as necessary.
  18. Follow the District’s system for the receipt and issuance of parts and supplies as well as maintaining recordkeeping and inventories.
  19. Ensure that all assigned vehicles, machinery, equipment, tools, and supplies are accounted for, secured, and used correctly.
  20. Attend appropriate training sessions, meetings, and classes as part of professional development.
  21. Accomplish assigned tasks in a safe and efficient manner.
  22. Operate and care for equipment used in daily work assignments.
  23. Maintain accurate and complete time sheets.
  24. Assist other maintenance areas with work requests as assigned.
  25. Assist with snow removal as necessary including operating snow plows, tractors, etc.
  26. Demonstrate professional image through appearance, language, and work ethic.
  27. Require good attendance record for continuity of operations.
  28. Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Term of Employment:                   Twelve (12) months

 

Evaluation:                                         Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the board policy on evaluation of Classified Personnel.

 

Significant Associations:              The performance responsibilities are not limited to those outlined in this description and may include any other responsibilities as assigned by the administrator/supervisor.
