Position Purpose:

Topeka Center for Advanced Learning and Careers STEM teachers assume responsibility for providing learning experiences in Technology Education disciplines and supervision of students in a supportive and positive climate that develops in each student the skills, attitudes, and knowledge to meet and exceed the State standards. The teacher is to maintain an organized, child-centered classroom with content-rich and standards-based lessons and activities, meeting individual needs through the use of assessments and data, and using a variety of instructional strategies reflective of current best practices and research.

The STEM – Biomedical Pathway curriculum includes but not limited to: Biology, Principles of Biomedical Science, Medical Interventions, and Project and Resource Scheduling. Achieving academic excellence will require that the teacher work collaboratively with other members of the school staff, parents, and business community. This pathway is offered through the Topeka Center for Advanced Learning and Careers Program. It is a program that offers pathways where students explore medical science professions through profession- and project-based with inquiry learning. Local and global business partners participate with highly skilled instructors to provide authentic exposure and skill acquisition with students.

Qualifications:  Licensed in Biology or Technical Certificate in Health Sciences. Willingness to earn industry certifications to teach industry supported curriculum in Project Lead the Way and Technology Education.

• Career Technical Student Organization Sponsor – willingness to sponsor and be a leader for this organization.
• Certifications include but not limited to: Project Lead the Way – Biomedical Strand.
• ESOL endorsement preferred

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, sit, talk, and hear.  The employee is frequently required to stand and reach with hands and arms.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  The employee is required to interact with staff and to meet demands from several people.  The employee is responsible for the work output of others.  On occasion, the employee may be required to work extended hours.

Work Environment:  Potential exposure to hazardous chemicals in a high school classroom setting or business setting.

Performance Responsibilities:

• Demonstrates industrial materials, equipment, tools and processes and technology by using standard or teacher-prepared models, mock-ups, sketches, and other instructional aides.
• Instructs students in the use, care, and safe operation of tools, machines, and equipment.
• Keeps informed of various professions and industry requirements and instructs students on the essential skills required by industry.
• Modifies teaching to meet individual student needs, including collaboration with common core teachers and student resources.
• Communicates high expectations to all learners.
• Effectively implements the district- and industry standards curriculum.
• Uses a variety of research-based instructional practices and current resources that support instructional goals and student needs.
• Models and facilitates high-order thinking, problem solving, creativity, and flexibility.
• Uses a variety of informal and formal assessment data in making instructional decisions.
• Makes students aware of assessment standards/learner expectations and assists students in developing self-assessment skills.
• Models enthusiasm for learning and teaching and treats students, patrons, and colleagues with dignity and respect.
• Demonstrates knowledge of how subject matter/disciplines are integrated.

• Participates in curriculum and other development pathway activities, including advisory board meetings in the enhancement of specific career and technical pathway developments.
• Develops and implements the Rapid Prototype Curriculum with subject matter experts
  • Participate in ongoing curriculum refinement with industry partners
  • Recruit and interact with business and academic external experts to expand the pathway curriculum and student projects
• Markets courses to increase and maintain enrollment e.g. career fairs, parent-student events, parent information nights, recognition night, etc.
• Manages student internships and assists students in managing their projects.

• Supports the District’s educational mission for all students and implements all Board regulations and policies in a fair and equitable manner.

• Performs other tasks and assumes other responsibilities as the superintendent or designee may assign.

Terms of Employment:

9 months; salary and work year to be determined by the Board of Education.

Evaluation:

Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board policy on evaluation of certified teachers, depending upon licensure.
